Twenty-six year-old Mark Zuckerberg has already had an impact on your life and is on his way to becoming one of the most famous people in the world. In many circles, he has already attained that stature. In case you don’t know, Zuckerberg founded Facebook (with a bit of help) and remains as its CEO. He and his brainchild have been in the news more than a little lately.
Privacy concerns top the list of newsworthy items concerning Facebook. This, with good reason. A recent interactive graphic from The Atlantic shows just how much more personal information Facebook is sharing now than just five years ago. What’s worse, adjusting settings to keep private information private has become more and more difficult. “Who cares?” you might say. With more than 400,000,000 active users, Facebook is too big to ignore. What it does affects much of America.
Another reason to care is that the business press clearly sees an IPO in Facebook’s future. This may be the biggest such business event since Google. It will have an impact on investors everywhere. You can learn more about the company’s founding and Zuckerberg in what excerpts indicate is a fascinating new book, “The Facebook Effect: …” by David Kirkpatrick.
Just where is all this going? The graphic included in this post gives a clue. It’s said to be Facebook’s “Mission Seal” and was apparently revealed accidentally at the D8 technology conference last week when Zuckerberg removed the hooded sweatshirt that is his personal trademark.
I use Facebook. Whether I wanted to or not (I do) I pretty much need to use it for business. What the Mission Seal says makes sense. It even seems rather innocuous. I can’t help but think, however, that the overall graphic appears to be a little sinister looking. Or is it just me?
