Eric Fulwiler from Social Media Today has brought as much common sense to the churn about social media as I have seen in a good long while…perhaps ever. You really ought to read his recent blog post, “10 things your grandmother can teach you about social media.“
The intro to each rule is deceptively simple with admonitions such as, “Tuck in your shirt,” or, “Send a thank you card.” The lessons, however, go deeper and are suitable for all. It wouldn’t be a stretch to label them as required reading. Of late, it seems to me that people are getting the social media thing wrong. Social media is not The thing. It is merely another tool we can all use to communicate in different ways. Developing sound messages and paying attention to social protocol should not be tossed out the window just because the vast majority of us have ceased to send personal letters in the mail.
