On Twitter, eating is of much higher interest than ending hunger

If you search on Google for “Twitter #endhunger,” meaning you are looking for people who are tweeting about ending hunger, some 404,000 results come up. That’s pretty respectable.

If, however, you search for “Twitter #recipes,” you get pings on 31,500,000 sites. Yes, there is a bit of a disparity between the two.

Frankly, I was kind of shocked. I had this idea that the recipe search would yield two or three times more hits. Instead, the total number of hits for #endhunger is more of a rounding error than a comparison to #recipes.

It may seem funny that I have sometimes struggled for my voice on Twitter. (Find me at MarksKiosk.) My tweets started with a cross between sustainability/corporate social responsibility and the communications industry. They then sort of morphed into social media and business. It seems I am finding my home in food production and related issues, including hunger. It’s also where there is a need that coincides with my day job. At Charleston Orwig, we are very much focused on food production. It only makes sense that we would use our knowledge (or I would at least) to battle hunger.

It’s quite easy to join in with this cause. Just do a search for #endhunger. Retweet those working toward that goal. Look for stories that you can retweet for others to share. If we can gain even a little bit on recipes in total hits, perhaps we can begin to make a difference in people’s lives.
