GM says its change of heart on the future of about 50 dealerships is due to a reassessment of finances and distances between dealers, indicating that “lobbying did not have anything to do with it.” Believe what you will, but it sure is nice to see some in the auto industry celebrating. It seems to me that good old-fashioned grassroots public relations efforts indeed played a role in General Motors’ decision to keep Gateway Motors open. Rather than cave in and close up shop after GM announced that this 80-year-old dealership in rural Nebraska would be among 1,300 locations to close, the dealership joined forces with the community to launch a massive letter-writing campaign, lobbying efforts, and even a cookout in town square.
