Loving technology? Still no substitute for common sense

I’ll be the first to admit that I love being a part of the technology age. iPod. Twitter. Facebook. Wireless Internet. GPS…

Whoa, not so fast. I’ve always felt a little Orwellian when I climb into a Hertz rental with its “Never Lost” GPS system. Rushing to a meeting or hotel and being guided only by a monotone voice from a box about three inches square always leaves me a little uncomfortable.

There is a Swedish couple in Italy that probably agrees with me. Evidently the couple was in a hurry when they programmed the GPS unit they were using during a recent vacation, because their typo led them 400 miles away from where they were supposed to be.

Instead of the Island of Capri along the southern Mediterranean coast, they found themselves in the town of Carpi. Transpose a “p” and an “r” and the next thing you know you are nowhere near the ocean, three-quarters of the way to Switzerland looking for the Blue Grotto Sea Cave.

I’m wondering, as a spokesperson for Carpi town hall did, why the couple thought they were on an island without going across a bridge.

Oh well. It’s time for me to go home. Where did I put my Garmin?
